05 How reading feels here

Readers talk back, line by line

Highlight a sentence and leave a note on it. Authors read those notes. Some rewrite because of them.

Whispers of the City · Chapter One 47 notes on this page

The morning the city changed its name, Amara was already awake, sitting on the rooftop with her grandfather’s old typewriter across her knees.23

Below her, the bazaar was opening. Vendors shouting prices for things she did not yet understand: mangoes, lace, copies of the newspaper that would, by evening, be wrong about everything.12

She wrote the first line of what would become her last letter to him: Dear Grandfather, today the city is loud and I am out of words.34

Then she stood up. There was work to do.

Hamayl Ahmed · Founder, Author & Writer

From one quiet reader to a global reading room

I started Narratia because the stories I loved most, and the writers who needed them most, had nowhere to gather.

I have been a reader for as long as I can remember and a writer for almost as long. I grew up in libraries, in borrowed books, in the kind of late night conversations where a single line of poetry changes how you see the world.

Narratia is the space I wished for: somewhere a writer in Lahore and a reader in Lagos end up in the same margin of the same page, arguing about the same sentence.

Read. Write. Belong. That is the whole idea.

I uploaded my first novel at 2am. By morning fifty readers had followed me. I had spent four years waiting on publishers.

As a poet, finding readers used to mean years of literary magazines. Now I publish a poem and it is read the same day.
